Synopsis: “The Burning” is about Gabe Johns, a Native teacher on a government reservation, a man who has finally triumphed in his life but nevertheless can't let go of his guilt about the still damaged lives of his ex-wife, Marilyn and first son, Jimmy. On a trip to town to deliver very personal letters to them, Gabe is fatally beaten in a parking lot by a local gangster, Hari, Jimmy's boss. A silent witness, Alex, a Russian immigrant, watches but does nothing. Later, Alex discovers that he is possessed by Gabe, who is not only changing his body, merging their memories, but now is in control when Alex sleeps. Alex tries without success to resist, but then, with the help of an ex-shaman from Gabe's community, finds the two letters and understands that Gabe wants him to complete his mission to help his first family. Alex delivers both letters and in the process helps Marilyn, once a law student and a star in her community, overcome a drinking problem and Jimmy, an angry young man, to walk away from dealing drugs and return to his community. But when the "Burning" ceremony of Gabe's body takes place, Gabe does not let go of Alex. There is one final thing that Gabe needs from him.
