The Last Guachupine
A Romantic Comedy
By Robert Fullerton
At the height of Spanish Power in New Spain, young Guachupines, as they were contemptuously called by the Indios, were sons of the Spanish born lords and conquistadores. As gifted with women as they were with weapons, they would don their best parade attire and ride up and down the Reforma, looking to snare a young rich girl, who, parading in her family carriage with her entourage was just as anxious to be snared.
Don Juan de Silva, refusing to give up this tradition, has become a strange curiosity during rush hour in Mexico City. Suzan Howard, a feature writer with “Style Magazine” a Toronto publication is sent to interview Don Juan and bring back a story…. When Miss Howard is forced to return with the anomaly himself, her family, her boy friend and Toronto high society find out more about these Guachupines than they bargained for … his family, however is relieved.
